Is It Time For Living Assistance?

Posted on: 7 August 2019

An assisted living facility is a place where a senior citizen or person with a disability can live. In this setting, they can still have their privacy when they want it but they can also have living assistance and help with the essentials when they need it.  The residents are not necessarily sick and do not need nursing care as with a nursing home.  Also, in assisted living, the quarters are more of a home-like setting.  It can look and feel like you are living in your own apartment.

How do you know when it may be time to consider assisted living for your loved one?  Here are some signs:

  • They are showing signs of dementia.  They may be forgetting to do important things, like take their medication, pay bills, or even shower.  In an assisted living facility, someone is there at all times to provide living assistance. The nursing staff can give them their medication on the correct schedule and give them reminders of things that they need to do.
  • They are not as mobile as they used to be.  They may still be able to get around but need help with activities of daily living. They may not be able to cook for themselves or do chores.  The staff of an assisted living facility can help with things like bathing, hygiene, grooming, getting dressed, and doing the laundry.
  • They may be lonely.  A senior may be living alone and not be able to get out like they used to. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation.  These feeling can lead to depression.  In an assisted living facility, they are around other people and can eat their meals with other residents in common dining areas.  There are also activities, like game nights, and outings, like shopping trips. This can make a big difference in their life.

It can be hard to see your parents or an elder loved one not able to fully take care of themselves.  You may have been used to them always being the caretaker.  It can be a difficult decision to let your loved one go into an assisted living facility.  However, you can take some comfort in the fact that in assisted living they are still in a home-like setting, and can still have the feeling of being independent.   They will also have, the extra care, safety, and support that they need

Understanding Assisted Living Centers

When was the last time you stopped to think about your grandparent's quality of life? I started thinking seriously about ways that I could make things right for my grandparents a few years ago, which is why I began looking into assisted living facilities. I knew that they needed constant support and around the clock care, so I looked for places that had a trained, polished medical staff and a commitment to excellence. I was able to find a great team of doctors and nurses that really cared, and they did an amazing job with my grandparents. Check out this blog for more information.
